There are three main types of tree guards that you can use as deer tree protection devices, all year round. The first type, the plastic tree guard, is fairly easy to install. The next type, the metal tree guard, is a little more involved, and might be difficult to install on the average tree without help. The last, the spiral guard, makes for a great overall protection device for any type of tree you want to protect.

Plastic Tree Guards

For use as deer tree protection, plastic tree guards are an affordable option. Consisting of thick plastic sheets on four thin, plastic spikes, they can be placed around any trees that are big enough to fit within their radius. Primarily designed to protect saplings from the elements, they also create an optimum temperature shield wherever the plastic covers, preventing the sapling from freezing in the winter. It is important that they not touch the bark to do this, however. It might not be much protection from large deer, who could reach above their height for leaves, but it will protect the fragile bark.

Metal Tree Guards

Metal tree guards are heavier than the plastic ones, and can be difficult to install in some situations. Just like the plastic guards, as deer tree protection for the bark of trees they work fine, buy may not be high enough to protect the leaves of a tree. You could place them on raised elevations around the tree with the help of other things like boxes or rocks, but their three feet height may wind up being counter productive.

Spiral Tree Guards

For the best in overall deer tree protection, including the leaves, you may want to invest in some spiral tree guards. Made out of the same material as deer fencing, spiral tree guards can be wrapped entirely around any given tree, including up into the branches where the tender leaves reside.
